Do you need a car in Kalk Bay?

Honest answer: not for the village itself, but yes for most of what brings people to this coast.

Dalebrook Place sits on Main Road in the heart of Kalk Bay, so daily life here happens on foot. Cross the road for a morning swim at the Dalebrook tidal pool, wander downstairs to Chardonnay Deli for coffee, walk to Olympia Café, the working harbour, Kalk Bay Books and the restaurants along Main Road. The SPAR up the road covers the grocery shop, and fresh fish comes straight off the boats at the harbour. For a slow, stay-put weekend, you can leave the keys in a drawer.

The train stretches that a little further. Kalk Bay station is a two-minute walk, and the Southern Line runs along the coast to Muizenberg, Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town — one of the loveliest short train rides in the country, with the sea at your shoulder the whole way. The direct service to Simon’s Town came back in February 2026: trains run through on weekdays, and on Saturdays you change to a shuttle at Fish Hoek for the last stretch. There are no trains on Sundays or public holidays, and the odd delay is part of the deal, so keep your plans loose around it.

But the peninsula is where a car earns its keep, and it’s worth being straight about that. The drive up Boyes Drive for the view over False Bay, the climb over Red Hill, Cape Point and the Boulders penguins, Chapman’s Peak, the Constantia wine farms — none of these are comfortably reached without your own wheels. Uber and Bolt both work here and are fine point to point, but the scenic drives are the whole reason to make the trip, and for those you want to be behind the wheel on your own timing.

So: arrive and settle without a car if your plan is the village. If you want to explore — and most of our guests do — hire one for the stay, or at least for the two or three days you’ll head further afield. The simplest option is to hire a car at the airport when you land; that’s generally the best place to do it.
