Dalebrook Tidal Pool

The pool is right there — directly across Main Road from us, set into the rocks where False Bay meets the Cape. At low tide it’s a calm, protected swim, sheltered enough for children and warm enough to linger in long after the open ocean turns cold. At high tide, the waves crest over the edge and it becomes one of the more dramatic swimming spots on the peninsula. The early morning, before the wind picks up, is when locals come down with coffee and towels. There’s no entry fee, no opening hours, no booking — just a short walk down the steps and in.

More information

The pool fills with each high tide and stays warm enough to swim from October through April. There is a small grass apron above the rocks for towels and a quick coffee from the deli across the road.

Olympia Café & Deli

Walk five minutes south along Main Road and you’ll arrive at Olympia Café — Kalk Bay’s heritage bakery and bistro and one of the most loved restaurants in Cape Town. The bread comes from the wood-fired oven at the back, the breakfast menu is short and confident, and they don’t take bookings, which means a queue at weekends and a quiet seat midweek. It’s the kind of place visitors mention to each other before they’ve even tried it. Worth the wait, worth the walk, and worth slipping into mid-morning on a quiet weekday.

Kalk Bay Harbour

The working harbour is a few minutes’ walk from the apartments and unchanged in spirit from a hundred years ago. Fishing boats come in through the morning; the catch is sold straight off the pier at Kalky’s; seals drift past the breakwater looking for handouts. Brass Bell and Harbour House sit overlooking the water — both Cape Town institutions, both happy to seat you for a long lunch with the swell rolling in beneath the floorboards. If you only do one thing in the village, walk down to the harbour at first light and watch the fleet come in.

More information

Boats land their catch from sunrise. Bring cash for the fish auction. Brass Bell is the spot for sundowners over the breakers; Harbour House is the upmarket dinner pick.

Main Road antique strip & Kalk Bay Books

Main Road from the harbour up to St James is the longest, densest concentration of antique shops, art galleries and curio dealers anywhere in the country. Quagga Rare Books & Art, Kalk Bay Modern, Kalk Bay Books and a dozen smaller dealers sit shoulder to shoulder, each one a small expedition into mid-century furniture, vintage maps, African art, secondhand novels and pieces you didn’t know you were looking for. Allow an afternoon — it’s the kind of strip that rewards slow walking and second visits.

More information

Most shops open around 10am and close by 5pm. Kalk Bay Books is the anchor — second-hand and rare titles across two floors. Quagga Books and the Antiques Market a few doors down are worth the detour.

Boyes Drive viewpoint

Boyes Drive is the mountain road that runs along the slopes above Kalk Bay, climbing from Muizenberg to Lakeside with the False Bay coastline unfurling below. From Dalebrook Place it’s a short drive — or, if you’re up for it, a proper walk up — to one of the best free viewpoints in Cape Town. Sunrise looking east across False Bay, with the fishing fleet heading out and the mountains catching the light, is one of those mornings that becomes a story when you get home. Go early. Take coffee.

More information

Five-minute drive from the property. Park at any of the lay-bys above Kalk Bay or St James. The whale-watching season (June–November) makes this a daily ritual for guests.

Day trips from Dalebrook Place

Kalk Bay is small enough to walk in a morning, which leaves the rest of Cape Town’s southern peninsula open to explore. Here’s where we send our own guests.

Boulders Beach (penguins) — 10 min

Ten minutes’ drive south, through Simon’s Town, brings you to Boulders — home to one of Africa’s only land-based African Penguin colonies. The boardwalk lets you walk over them safely; the smaller swimming beach next door is sheltered by granite boulders and warm enough to actually swim in. Pay the SANParks entry fee at the gate. Go early to beat the tour buses or late afternoon to catch the penguins coming home from sea. A morning out, easily, with breakfast en route at one of Simon’s Town’s many small cafés.

Cape Point Nature Reserve — 30 min

Half an hour south of the village is the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula — sheer cliffs, indigenous fynbos, eland and bontebok grazing along the road, and the lighthouse trail leading to one of the most photographed views in the country. Allow most of a day. Take the funicular up to the old lighthouse for the view, then walk down to the new one if you’re feeling it. Pack water and a hat — there’s no shade once you’re out on the trails.

Chapman’s Peak Drive — 25 min

The 9km coastal road from Hout Bay to Noordhoek is one of the most spectacular drives in the world — narrow, cliff-edge, with the Atlantic falling away to your left and the Twelve Apostles rising on your right. About 25 minutes’ drive from Kalk Bay, depending on traffic. There’s a small toll to use the road, the viewpoints are signposted, and late-afternoon light makes it unforgettable. Allow an hour each way and stop often.

Constantia winelands — 25 min

Cape Town’s oldest wine-producing valley sits 25 minutes north of the village, on the other side of Constantia Nek. Groot Constantia, Buitenverwachting and Klein Constantia are the historical anchors — three estates with cellars, restaurants and gardens worth a full afternoon. Tastings are walk-in friendly most days; book ahead for lunch at Buitenverwachting or La Colombe if the weather’s good. A relaxed alternative to a Stellenbosch day and easier to fit between morning and dinner back in the village.

Table Mountain Cableway — 35 min

The cableway runs from the lower station, about 35 minutes’ drive from Dalebrook Place via the M3. The trip up is five minutes; the time you’ll spend at the top is harder to predict — most people stay an hour or two longer than they meant to. The summit is broad and walkable, with several short trails along the upper plateau. Buy tickets online before you go, check the weather (the cableway closes in wind), and plan to be back down before sunset unless you want the trip back in headlight traffic.
